TRAINING TODDLERS IN BICYCLE RIDING

Author name

Toddlers from as early as 2 years of age have learnt how to ride bicycles without having the need to be back strapped to their parents. The toddler bicycle is custom designed for the toddler to balance in bicycle riding with some parental supervision so that the toddler becomes more confident and stable in riding. It also helps to train the motor skills and the physical and cognitive abilities of the toddlers, based on the developmental factors, in basic forms.
If you are a parent, this article seeks to share with you how to teach and train your toddler children to ride a bicycle. As the best of parental intentions are not enough, we will share with you how your toddler can be trained well in bicycle riding by avoiding common instructional mistakes, even if it is your first time doing so.
Firstly, do train your toddler not to start on the streets. Think from their point of views if they ever sit on the saddle for the first time in their life, how would they feel? In Singapore, train your toddler at a pavement that is not full of people, or at park connectors that have footpath pavements, instead of the cycling pavements as the bicycles do move fast and can injure accidentally.
The second point is to use training wheels as toddlers at the age of 2 or 3 can be too young to maneuvre around with only 2 large wheels. As the child is a toddler who is not ready to pedal, the training wheels at the sides can help the toddlers boost their confidence and steadiness in the bicycle ride, before they go older. Riding a bicycle needs coordination to balance well and toddlers below 5 years of age are not ready to be trained in bicycle riding by full pedaling.
Get the right sizes of bicycles for the toddlers. According to bicycle experts, it is recommended that 12 inches wheel sizes are for ages 2 to 3, 14 inches for 3 to 4 and 16 inches for 4 to 5. The toddler must also be able to stand over the top tube with both feet bottom resting on the ground. If they cannot put them down, then the bike is deemed too big for them.
Perhaps, there is a newer method to train toddlers to ride bicycles. That is by using the special balance bikes that have no pedals. Toddlers would use their own feet to push themselves forward and learn how to balance and steer and also to control. It does not have the 2 extra training wheels to guide.
Riding bicycle is a great outdoor sports skill which people can use for life and it would be good for them to start from the toddler ages. It is of utmost importance to ensure safety first always during the training of toddlers.
